Online-shoppers have long since become accustomed to being able to trace the route of their package from the sender to their front door. Tracking goods in real time is part of everyday life in the mail order business and is now also finding its way into warehouse logistics.

Manufacturing companies need to be aware of the location of their inventory of production equipment and retailers need to be informed about current stock levels, all in real time and without having to manually maintain and update lists. Given the size and complexity of logistics in large warehouses, these kinds of location and tracking services can reduce search times dramatically and also help to streamline internal workflows. This is made possible by Kontakt io’s Bluetooth beacons and their IoT Analytics platform Simon AI.

Bluetooth Tracking in Real Time

Essentially a small transmitter, beacons are built into a compact, sturdy housing and sent out a Bluetooth signal at constant intervals. Other devices can “see” this signal and use it to trigger predefined actions, transmit data or drive custom applications. Since each Beacon has an individual ID signature, several Beacons can be distributed over the entire storage area of a company. This creates a close-meshed radio grid.

Smart Beacons enable real-time tracking via Bluetooth

At the same time, Bluetooth beacons can be assigned to any goods stored in a warehouse that need to be tracked. With Kontakt.io’s proprietary Location IoT Analytics Platform, Simon AI, not only goods but also materials and physical processes can be tracked in real-time, analyzed, and monitored. This visibility provides managers with data insight that improves decision making in resource planning, operations, quality control and sales.

Beacons have any number of other applications in every business vertical and public space. Transport hubs like larger airports and railway stations are especially well-suited to the capabilities of beacons, in particular applications like wayfinding provided through a dedicated smartphone app.

Lithium Button Cells as Energy Suppliers

Despite its various fields of application, the Beacon’s construction is quite simple: a CPU, a radio transmitter, a casing and that’s it. Depending on the model, light, temperature and acceleration sensors can be added. The power consumption of the device is correspondingly low. “Just one of our lithium button cells supplies a Beacon with enough power for several months,” explains Viktor Sichwardt, who is in charge of the project on Jauch’s side.

“When we approached Jauch there were two factors of particular importance: consistent quality of the cells and their fast availability – two of Jauch’s particular strenghts.”

The Beacons from Kontakt io have been “powered by Jauch” for a year. Lithium button cells of the type CR2477 are used, either individually or wired into a 1s2p-pack. “When we approached Jauch there were two factors of particular importance: consistent quality of the cells and their fast availability – two of Jauch’s particular strenghts”, says Tomasz Stasierski, Head of Operations at Kontakt io.

Reliable Quality Directly From Stock

Jauch has a continuously growing network of production partners in Asia. Regular audits ensure that the quality of the battery cells produced always meets the required standards. “Most important parameters are not only the service life of the cell but also its performance at very high or very low ambient temperatures,” says Viktor Sichwardt. “With the help of appropriate benchmark tests, we can prove the quality of our cells at any time.”

When it comes to availability, Jauch showed off itself as reliable partner right from the beginning “The standard delivery time for this type of button cell usually is three to four months. However, we already had the cells in stock and could deliver immediately. This was of course an important time saving for our customer,” says Sichwardt. Last but not least, Jauch was also convincing in terms of price – despite the naturally high price sensitivity in the button cell sector.
