Lithium thionyl chloride batteries are available in many different sizes and forms and can therefore be used flexibly. They are used in numerous applications and are characterized by their high energy density. This density is higher than that of all other primary cells, making lithium thionyl chloride batteries particularly suitable for applications with low power requirements over a long period of time. In typical applications such as timers, locking cylinders, heating/hot water meters, toll systems, etc., lithium thionyl chloride batteries can be used for months and years without having to be replaced.
The longevity of lithium thionyl chloride batteries is demonstrated not only in use but also during storage. Due to their extremely low self-discharge rate of just 1% per year, batteries of this technology can be stored over a longer period of time.
You can read more information in our blog post on the advantages and special features of lithium thionyl chloride batteries.
The lithium thionyl chloride battery (LiSOCl2) is a non-rechargeable battery with lithium as anode and a graphite electrode as cathode. The thionyl chloride is cathodically reduced and serves both as solvent and electrolyte.
At 3.6 volts, the cell voltage of lithium thionyl chloride batteries is significantly higher than the voltage level of other primary battery types. This voltage level is kept constant almost throughout the entire discharge period of the battery. But this is not the only reason why LiSOCl2 cell chemistry stands out from the series of non-rechargeable cells. It is also superior to all other primary cells in terms of energy density with up to 710 Wh/kg.
Lithium thionyl chloride cells of the Jauch brand are available in cylindrical design in sizes 1/2AA to D and can be used in a wide temperature range from -60°C to +85°C. Even at very low temperatures, the cells show good performance and a constant high voltage. The cell capacities range from 1.2 Ah to 19 Ah.
Like all lithium batteries, lithium thionyl chloride cells and batteries are classified as hazardous materials. Special care is therefore required when storing and handling LiSOCl2 cells and batteries. When transported by road, rail or air, high legal requirements must also be met.
It goes without saying that lithium thionyl chloride batteries from Jauch comply with all necessary guidelines and fulfil the legal requirements. They are also compliant with the European REACH regulation and IEC60086-4 as well as certified to UL1642.
