JT11: Miniaturized TCXOs for maximum frequency stability

Jauch is introducing a new series of high-precision TCXOs in the smallest housing size.

Temperature-compensated quartz oscillators (TCXOs) are clock generators that produce a very stable frequency regardless of temperature fluctuations. Such a temperature-compensated quartz oscillator uses the mechanical resonance of a quartz crystal to generate a precise frequency, which is, however, influenced by temperature changes. To achieve improved frequency stability, TCXOs use a technique called temperature compensation to reduce the temperature-dependent frequency variation of the quartz crystal itself.

To enable temperature compensation, several function blocks are required. An integrated temperature sensor measures the ambient temperature of the TCXO. Using the measured temperature, a control voltage generator generates a temperature-dependent voltage. This temperature-dependent voltage controls the load capacity of the quartz crystal via capacitance diodes in such a way that the temperature-dependent frequency change of the quartz disk is counteracted. By using this technology, temperature-compensated quartz oscillators (TCXOs) achieve exceptionally high frequency stability. This makes them particularly suitable for applications such as cell phones, GPS devices and other electronic systems.

In general, there is an increasing demand in industry for ever more precise devices and electronic components. At the same time, these applications are becoming more and more compact, further reducing the space available for electronic components on the circuit boards. In order to meet the increased demand for miniaturization in the future, Jauch is offering a new product group of high-precision, miniaturized TCXOs. These TCXOs in a miniature 1.6 x 1.2 mm SMD package make very efficient use of limited PCB space while ensuring the required frequency stability.

The JT11 product family

The new JT11 quartz oscillators with clipped sine output are characterized by excellent frequency stability of up to ±0.5ppm, setting a new standard in terms of size and energy efficiency. All quartz oscillators in this product family can be used in a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. They offer clock frequencies in a range of 13.0 - 52.0 MHz. Typical applications are WiMAX, LTE, GNSS (GPS) and Wi-Fi communication devices. Standard frequencies are 19.20 / 26.0 / 38.40 / 52.0 MHz.

JT11LE – TCXO for low power applications

Due to its extremely low power consumption, the JT11LE (Low Energy) enables energy-efficient solutions in an ultra-small housing. This TCXO is particularly suitable for applications with minimal space for the design-in of the frequency component, and especially for battery-powered applications in the area of navigation and tracking. The JT11LE operates in a variable operating voltage range of 1.2 to 1.8V. This oscillator also offers the option of a so-called stop function. This makes it possible to reduce the current consumption to a few µA when no clock signal is required at times. The output driver is switched to high impedance and the internal oscillator is switched off.

JT11S and JT11SV – TCXO and VCTCXOs for wireless and industrial applications

These TCXOs and VCTCXOs are suitable for fixed operating voltage levels in the range of 1.8V to 3.3V. The JT11S is a pure TCXO. The JT11SV VCTCXO offers the option of voltage control: The frequency of the oscillator can be changed within certain limits using an external voltage. This enabled precise control and adjustment of the frequency in the application.

JT11Gxx – TCXO for GNSS applications

The type designation JT11G identifies a series of TCXOs that are specifically designed for satellite navigation (GNSS) applications. These TCXOs are characterized by minimal static frequency hysteresis and a very smooth frequency characteristic over temperature (F/T). This makes them ideal for GPS applications, for example. The JT11G is suitable for fixed operating voltage levels in the range of 1.8V to 3.3V, while the JT11GLE can operate in a variable operating voltage range of 1.2 to 1.8V. The JT11GLE also offers the option of the stop function described above, in which the current consumption is reduced to a few µA when no clock signal is required at times.  In summary, it can be said that the different versions of the Jauch JT11 support a wide variety of applications in the field of satellite navigation, but also in the field of communication technology and network technology. Due to their miniature SMD packages measuring only 1.6 x 1.2 mm, these oscillators take up little of the limited space on circuit boards, while at the same time being very efficient in terms of power consumption.
